I have seen on many occasions expensive fitted entrance matting in shops and commercial buildings that just doesn't work. How do I know it doesn't work? Every time it rains or snows there is a small yellow sign that says 'beware wet floor' or something similar, or there are a bunch of other loose lay mats, usually finishing mats, scattered on the floor afterward or just inside the fitted mat
Why are these fitted entrance mats so ineffective?
Most of them have a metal or plastic grid that will help remove mud if feet are scraped on them, but they are not effective against water. They may have some absorbent material in the entrance system, however, this is usually much too thin, too sparse, or just doesn't soak up enough water to be effective.
Are they ineffective because they are cheap?
No, most of these systems cost upwards of £450.00 per m2 and in many cases, they cost considerably more.
Are these mat systems easy to replace or repair?
Often if there is damage to a small part of the system, the whole system has to be replaced as the metal runs right through. This can be difficult and expensive as it will often require a skilled labourer to carry out the repair.
Is there an alternative effective entrance mat that will fit an existing mat well?
YES!
