How to clean your Entrance Mats

A question often asked by our customers, is 'how do I clean my entrance mats?' Some customers will even choose a mat rental service over purchasing a new mat, so that they don't have to worry about cleaning it themselves.

However, a mat is so easy to clean and can be treated exactly like your carpets and floors. Why waste your money on a mat rental service to get your mats cleaned, when the cleaning staff you are already paying will be able to clean them with ease?

How you clean your mat, depends on the type of mat/s that you have. Read below to find out how easy it is to clean your mats, or watch our video tutorials.

Outdoor Entrance Mats
The best way to clean your outdoor rubber entrance mats, is to simply use either a hose or a pressure washer to blast off all of the dirt. You may need to adjust the pressure, depending on the type of mat that you have. For example, if you have a mat with holes, you may need quite a high pressure in order to lift the dirt and debris from the holes, or alternatively lift the mat and brush the dirt away.

Bi-Level Entrance Mats (e.g. Waterhog)
You can clean your Bi-Level entrance mats in a number of ways, depending on how dirty they are.

In the first instance, you may even be able to simply shake off your mat outside to get rid of the initial debris. This will however, depend on the size and weight of the mat.

For general cleaning and maintenance, go over the mat with your usual vacuum cleaner preferably an upright vacuum. The roller brush of an upright vacuum will agitate the dirt contained within the mat, leaving your mat clean and free of dirt.

TIP: Have the roller brush on the lowest setting so that it can agitate the dirt contained in the base of the mat.

For more stubborn soil and dirt, you may need to use a hose or a pressure washer to clean your mat. Hang the mat out to dry before placing it back in your entranceway.

Interior Mats
For the general day to day cleaning of your interior floor protection or dust control mats, start by simply vacuuming them as you would your carpets. Again, it is best to use an upright vacuum cleaner whcih will agitate and remove the dirt from the pile.

If your mat is particularly muddy or stained, you could use a carpet shampooer to clean it, again just as you would with your carpets.

TIP: Don't use too much carpet shampoo in the machine, as the solution will end up too foamy.

Many of these types of mats are also launderable and can be simply placed into a washing machine to clean them. If you are unsure whether your mat is launderable, always check with your supplier first.

TIP: Don't use fabric conditioner in the wash, as this will have a detrimental effect on the absorbency properties of the mat.

Choosing the Right Machines for Cleaning Entrance Mats

Maintaining clean and effective entrance mats is crucial for ensuring a safe and welcoming environment in both residential and commercial spaces. These mats play a vital role in trapping dirt, moisture, and debris, preventing them from being tracked indoors. To keep entrance mats in optimal condition, it’s essential to use the right cleaning machines. In this blog, we’ll explore the best machines for cleaning entrance mats and how to choose the right one for your needs.

The Importance of Clean Entrance Mats

Clean entrance mats are essential for several reasons:

  1. Safety: Clean mats reduce the risk of slips and falls by removing dirt and moisture from shoes, keeping floors dry and safe.
  2. Aesthetic Appeal: Well-maintained mats enhance the overall appearance of your entrance, creating a positive first impression for visitors.
  3. Durability: Regular cleaning extends the lifespan of entrance mats, ensuring they remain effective and look good for longer.

Types of Machines for Cleaning Entrance Mats

When it comes to cleaning entrance mats, there are several types of machines to consider. Each type has its unique features and benefits, making it suitable for different cleaning needs.

  1. Vacuum Cleaners: Vacuum cleaners are essential for regular maintenance of entrance mats. They effectively remove loose dirt, dust, and debris from the surface of the mats. When choosing a vacuum cleaner, look for one with strong suction power and a brush roll to agitate the fibers and lift embedded dirt. Upright vacuums and canister vacuums are both good options, depending on your preference and the size of the area to be cleaned.

  2. Carpet Extractors: Carpet extractors, also known as carpet cleaners or steam cleaners, are ideal for deep cleaning entrance mats. These machines use a combination of hot water, cleaning solution, and powerful suction to remove dirt, stains, and moisture from the mats. When selecting a carpet extractor, consider the size of the water tank, the power of the suction, and the type of cleaning solution it uses. Portable extractors are suitable for smaller areas, while larger, commercial-grade extractors are better for extensive cleaning tasks.

  3. Rotary Floor Machines: Rotary floor machines, also known as floor buffers or polishers, are versatile machines that can be used for cleaning and maintaining entrance mats. These machines use a rotating brush or pad to scrub the surface of the mats, effectively removing dirt and stains. When choosing a rotary floor machine, look for one with adjustable speed settings and a variety of brush and pad options to suit different cleaning needs.

  4. Pressure Washers: For outdoor entrance mats or mats that can be removed and cleaned outside, pressure washers are an excellent option. These machines use high-pressure water to blast away dirt, grime, and stains from the mats. When selecting a pressure washer, consider the pressure rating (measured in PSI) and the flow rate (measured in GPM) to ensure it has enough power to clean the mats effectively. Portable pressure washers are convenient for smaller areas, while larger, commercial-grade models are suitable for extensive cleaning tasks.

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Cleaning Machine

When selecting the right machine for cleaning entrance mats, consider the following factors:

  1. Type of Mat: Different types of entrance mats require different cleaning methods. For example, rubber mats may be best cleaned with a pressure washer, while carpeted mats may require a carpet extractor.

  2. Frequency of Cleaning: Consider how often the mats need to be cleaned. High-traffic areas may require more frequent cleaning, so choose a machine that can handle regular use.

  3. Size of the Area: The size of the area to be cleaned will determine the type and size of the machine needed. Larger areas may require commercial-grade machines, while smaller areas can be cleaned with portable or smaller machines.

  4. Ease of Use: Choose a machine that is easy to operate and maintain. Look for features such as adjustable settings, easy-to-fill tanks, and simple controls.

  5. Budget: Consider your budget when selecting a cleaning machine. While commercial-grade machines may have a higher upfront cost, they can be more cost-effective in the long run due to their durability and efficiency.

Conclusion

In conclusion, choosing the right machines for cleaning entrance mats is essential for maintaining a safe, clean, and welcoming environment. By considering factors such as the type of mat, frequency of cleaning, size of the area, ease of use, and budget, you can select the best machine for your needs. Regular cleaning with the appropriate machines will ensure that your entrance mats remain effective and look their best, enhancing the overall appearance and safety of your space. Invest in the right cleaning machines today to keep your entrance mats in top condition.
