How to Stop Grease Tracked from Kitchens onto Dining Room Floors

Kitchens are extremely hazardous places and grease is well known to be a primary cause of slip and fall accidents. Chefs, restaurant owners and managers are well versed on the importance of cleaning methods to prevent grease build up, but less is known about combatting the problem of grease being tracked outside of the kitchen onto surrounding floors and carpets.

The problem with grease on surrounding floors:

Grease originating from the kitchen, especially on the kitchen floors, is picked up on footwear and trolley wheels and tracked out of the kitchen onto surrounding floors. If you encounter this problem, then you are likely no stranger to the following issues:

  1. Discolouration of carpets or a darker path where staff walk to and from the kitchen.
  2. Grease on hard floors outside the kitchen which can cause slips if not regularly cleaned.
  3. Frequent cleaning of floors outside of the kitchen due to dirt being attracted to the grease.
  4. An increase in cleaning costs. Once grease is ingrained in carpets and floors, it is more difficult to remove.
  5. Staff with grease on soles increasingly the likelihood slips.

The solution to stopping grease tracking onto surrounding floors:

All commercial kitchens should have a cleaning programme in place to combat grease accumulating in the first place. Cleaning up spills as they occur as well as a regular cleaning routine to prevent the accumulation of grease, not just on floors but on all surfaces exposed to grease too.

In addition to cleaning, more unfamiliar methods to combat the problem include:

  1. Lips on counters to contain spillages and stop it falling onto floors.
  2. Grease proof mats to contain spillages and provide a slip free surface in kitchens.
  3. Grease removal mats placed in the area between the kitchen and external areas to remove grease from footwear and wheeled traffic.

What to do next?

The last two methods mentioned are where we can help. Mats4U have been selling mats into commercial kitchens and restaurants for over 20 years and we are trusted by businesses and many large restaurant brands around the UK to help them with a solution to problems caused by grease.
