3 Mat Entry System

Winter is here and with it comes the wet, less desirable weather. We are all too aware that this time of year is a particularly challenging time to keep the dirt, mud and water out of our properties. Our customers regularly ask us for some advice on the best way to keep the dirt from coming into their property. This article will cover some of the main points we tell them.

Whether it’s your home or business, it can be an expensive and timely task removing what has already been brought in on footwear. The old adage that prevention is better than cure is particularly true in this situation and you can make your life considerably easier and a lot less costly by employing some very simple measures indeed.

The best way to stop dirt being walked into your property is by using effective entrance matting in any area where people are coming into your building from the outside. Also known as barrier matting, effective entrance matting will create a barrier for dirt and moisture between the outside and inside of your property.

1. Use an entrance mat system

An ideal way to prevent dirt and moisture coming into your building is to use an entrance matting system. You will see many articles on the Mats4U website covering our 3 mat entry system which we believe to be the most effective. Essentially you need:

  • An outdoor entrance mat to take off the heavy dirt, such as mud and snow, from footwear.
  • An indoor bi-level entrance mat to remove the dirt and moisture.
  • A finishing mat to remove any remaining lighter dirt and to completely dry the footwear.

2. Choose the best / most effective entrance mats

Bi level construction

It’s not always about what looks the nicest or what you can find on the internet for the cheapest price. Remember you only really need something that is going to do the best job for you. Investing in a more effective entrance mat may cost a bit more money initially, but bear in mind that it will actually save you a lot more money in cleaning costs over the long term.

The best entrance mat for keeping dirt, mud and snow from coming into your property will be a ‘bi-level’ mat. A bi-level mat will have an upper surface for wiping and scraping footwear and a lower surface for holding onto the dirt and moisture and stopping it being tracked off the mat as subsequent people walk over it.

Mats that aren’t bi-level can quickly become saturated in poor weather or if they are not cleaned regularly. They will no longer be able to remove further dirt and moisture and will therefore be totally ineffective.
