We firmly believe that the mat you buy from Mats4U should be an educated choice, which is why we want to give you some insight. We have created a comprehensive guide, detailing the pros and cons of coir matting, so that you can decide whether or not it has the functionality that you and your premises require.
What Is Coir Matting?
Coir matting is also known as coconut matting, because it is made from 100% natural fibres- from the husk of a coconut! While you may not know them by name, you will definitely recognise them on sight- they are brown, bristly and great for removing dirt. If you want to keep a clean house or office space, this is definitely the mat for you.
A coir mat is used in entranceways, and you will typically see it installed in wells or recesses in stores, hotels and pubs. It is often the first choice for entranceway matting because it is both practical and cost-effective.
What Is Coir Used For?
Coir has a diverse range of uses, and is by no means restricted to entranceway matting. This is because there are different types of coir, each with different properties and colours. While we only use coir for mats, because that's our area of speciality, it’s really interesting to think about what else these fibres are used for.
Red Coir
It often appears brown, and is the most popular choice for entrance matting because of its heavy duty fibres. It can also be used in mattresses and brushes.
Brown Coir
This is considerably softer, and is typically used in upholstery. It is the preferred padding choice for many, because of its durability and malleability.
White Coir
It is often used for fishing nets and ropes, because it is the softest of the types.
Pros Of Coir Matting
Cost Effective
This is one of the cheapest materials that we offer. It’s incredibly low price point means that it is a cost-effective purchase, even if you have to replace it over time. It is available for domestic, commercial and industrial use, with different price points dictated by colour, quality, depth and size. We offer a range of traditional sizes, custom sizing and coir matting on the roll, which means that we can cover any and all possible uses.
Appearance
It is a popular choice for entrance matting because it is incredibly natural looking, and so doesn’t catch the eye or stand out obnoxiously. It is easily dyed in different colours, and so can be matched to the interior or exterior of the premises, according to your preferences. As well as being durable, it looks durable, and so people are unafraid to make the most of it and use it well before entering.
Easy Dirt Removal
The firm, bristled texture of coir matting means that it has excellent scraping and wiping properties. It is water-proof, strong and durable. The coconut fibres scrape and wipe dirt and water from the bottom of your shoes, which is similar to the cleaning technique you would use to prevent build up over time. Having a mat that removes dirt effectively is essential for homes and businesses alike, as it significantly reduces slip hazards.
At Mats4U, our commercial grade Dutch Coir uses twisted piles, better preventing the mat from becoming crushed or packed during long-term use.
Mat Wells And Recesses
Coir matting is incredibly easy to cut into any size or shape, which means it is the preferred material for mat wells and recesses. Numerous depth options means that you can ensure that your mat is fitted level to the surrounding floor, so that it is not a possible trip hazard.
Good For The Environment
Coir matting is environmentally friendly, because it is made entirely from the husk of a coconut! Not only is it biodegradable, but the fibres that aren’t used during the manufacturing process can be used for different purposes, and so there is minimal waste. Long bristle fibres aren’t used within the mat industry, but can be used in gardening: to stabilise soil, protect vegetation and prevent degradation and erosion. This means that the bits we don’t use are being used for good elsewhere!
Cons Of Coir Matting
Not DDA Compliant
The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) 1995 and 2005 outlines that it is unlawful for disabled customers, staff or visitors to be treated less favourably. This means that there are strict regulations that businesses must adhere to, in order to ensure that their premises are accessible to everyone, with no exceptions.
Coir matting has a deep pile, which can be difficult to negotiate with a wheelchair, cane, trolley or pushchair. This is because the coir impedes and restricts movement, especially if it is of significant depth.
Fire Safety
The material can pose a significant fire safety risk because it is more flammable than other matting materials. This should be something you take into consideration when choosing your mat, especially if your premises is more vulnerable to fire hazards, such as a restaurant or factory.
Shedding
Mats made from this material shed heavily, from the moment they are taken out of their packaging. Although this significantly reduces after short term use, it means that you are likely to spend some time cleaning the area around your mat, which can be especially time consuming if you have carpet rather than panelled flooring.
Wearing
Coir crushes relatively quickly, which can render it ineffective in removing dirt and debris over time. Despite being strong and resistant, it is likely that you will have to regularly replace your mat to reap all of its benefits, and ensure that it is as effective as possible.
To prevent the early onset of shedding and wearing, you should ensure that you are purchasing the highest grade of coir. It is always better to buy from a mat specialist rather than a supermarket, as you have more options available to you.
Difficult To Clean
The depth of the pile means that coir matting can be incredibly difficult to clean. Not cleaning your mat can make it unsightly, and can have a negative impact on the entrance to your premises.
The best way to clean your mat is by beating it with a heavy object, outside so that you don’t make a mess. A stiff-bristled brush is great for more in-depth cleaning.
