Correct installation helps the tiles remain secure, protects the grass beneath and supports the performance of the surfacing. Before starting, check the required critical fall height (CFH) for your application and make sure the ground is suitable.

Step 1: Prepare the Ground

Mark out the area and check that the ground is reasonably level. Fill any potholes or undulations with topsoil or sharp sand and compact the surface. Add grass seed where needed.

For improved stability, we recommend laying Greenskeeper Mesh across the entire installation area before positioning the tiles. This helps reduce the risk of the mats sinking into the soil.

Step 2: Position the Tiles

Lay the 1m × 1m mats over the prepared grass or underlay, aligning the interlocking edges. Each mat consists of four interlocking 500 × 500mm sections, providing 1m² of coverage.

Join the mats using a metal joining plate and mallet, or use cable ties to connect them. If using cable ties, trim off the excess and tuck the joins underneath the mats.

Step 3: Cut Tiles to Fit

Tiles can be trimmed to fit around boundaries and equipment. Use a sharp utility knife and take care when cutting.

When cutting around support poles, cut the outer edge at a 45° angle for a neater join. Cut holes around equipment support posts at a 90° angle.

Step 4: Secure the Perimeter

Roll back the tiles around the perimeter and mark the ground approximately 150mm beyond the outer edge. Cut and roll back the turf, then secure the perimeter of the installation using suitable fixing pegs.

Important: Do not use fixing pegs within critical fall zones. Check the layout and safety requirements for your installation before positioning any fixings.

Step 5: Replace the Turf

Once the perimeter has been secured, relay the cut wedge of turf into the recess around the tiles. Keep the turf well watered to encourage it to establish and grow.

As the grass grows through the open cellular structure, the tiles can become less noticeable within the grassed area. Once the grass is established, the surface can be mown.

Installation Temperature

For best results, install the tiles at temperatures above 10°C and below 30°C. Keep the tiles at a similar ambient temperature during installation, as they can expand or contract with temperature changes.

If temperatures exceed 30°C, store and install the tiles in the shade. Installing them in excessive heat without shade may increase the risk of splitting during colder weather. Cold water can be used to cool the tiles when necessary.
