About This Mat

Description

Traditional, durable and made to fit your entrance perfectly, our 17mm Heavy-Duty Coir Matting – Custom Cut to Size is one of the UK's most popular choices for keeping dirt and debris where it belongs—outside.

Manufactured from natural coconut fibres, coir has been trusted for generations because of its excellent dirt-scraping properties and timeless appearance. The coarse fibres help remove mud, grit and everyday debris from footwear before it's carried further into your home or workplace, helping to keep internal floors cleaner while reducing everyday cleaning.

At 17mm thick, this coir matting offers an excellent balance between durability and practicality. It's thick enough to provide effective scraping performance while fitting many standard mat wells, making it suitable for both recessed installations and loose-laid entrances.

Every order is custom cut to your exact dimensions, so your mat is made specifically for your entrance rather than taken from pre-cut stock. Whether you're replacing an existing mat, fitting out a new entrance or filling a recessed mat well, your coir matting is manufactured to your required size for a professional finish.

Suitable for homes, offices, schools, shops, hotels and other busy entrances, 17mm Heavy-Duty Coir Matting combines traditional craftsmanship with practical everyday performance. It's designed for indoor use or covered outdoor areas, where it can provide years of reliable service when properly maintained.

Why Invest in Quality Coir Matting?

Not all coir matting is created equal.

The quality of the coconut fibres, the manufacturing process and the way the mat is finished all play an important role in how well it performs and how long it lasts.

At Mats4U, every piece of 17mm Heavy-Duty Coir Matting is custom cut to order. Rather than selecting a pre-cut mat that's been sitting on a shelf, your mat is cut to your specified dimensions from a fresh roll, helping ensure a precise fit for your entrance or mat well.

Because coir is a natural material, every piece has its own unique character. Slight variations in colour and fibre texture are completely normal and are part of what makes genuine coir matting such a popular choice. These natural variations aren't defects—they're a reflection of the material itself.

When properly installed and maintained, a quality coir mat provides an attractive, durable and effective entrance solution that's been trusted in homes and businesses for generations.

We've included the specifications here so you can quickly check whether this product is suitable for your entrance, but if you're unsure about anything—from thickness and sizing to installation or maintenance—we're always happy to help.

Sometimes a quick conversation can save a lot of guesswork and help ensure you choose the right mat first time.

Why Choose 17mm Coir Matting?
(Click to open/close)

When choosing coir matting, one of the most important decisions is selecting the right thickness. While coir is available in several depths, 17mm has become one of the most popular choices because it offers an excellent balance between effective dirt removal and everyday practicality.

The natural coconut fibres create a coarse surface that helps scrape dirt, mud and debris from footwear before it's carried further indoors. At 17mm thick, the mat provides enough depth for the fibres to work effectively while remaining suitable for many standard recessed mat wells and entrance areas.

For many homes and businesses, 17mm is the ideal middle ground. It's substantial enough to cope with regular daily foot traffic, yet versatile enough to suit a wide range of entrances without requiring an unusually deep mat well.

Whether you're replacing an existing coir mat or fitting a new entrance, 17mm Heavy-Duty Coir Matting is a practical choice that combines traditional appearance with dependable everyday performance.

The Benefits of 17mm Coir Matting

Excellent Dirt Scraping Performance

The coarse natural coir fibres help remove mud, grit and everyday debris from footwear before it's tracked into your property, helping keep interior floors cleaner.

Suitable for Many Standard Mat Wells One of the reasons 17mm coir is so popular is that it fits many recessed entrance mat wells found in homes and commercial buildings, making it a straightforward replacement for worn or damaged matting.

If you're unsure whether 17mm is suitable for your mat well, we're always happy to help you choose the right thickness.

A Traditional Appearance

Natural coir has been used in entrances for generations, and its warm, textured appearance continues to complement both traditional and contemporary properties.

Whether it's installed in a period home, a modern office or a boutique hotel, coir brings a timeless, welcoming finish to an entrance.

Custom Cut to Fit Your Entrance

Every entrance is different.

That's why we cut your coir matting to the exact dimensions you specify, helping you achieve a neater fit than standard off-the-shelf mats.

Whether you need a small domestic doormat or a larger piece of matting for a commercial entrance, your order is prepared to your required size.

A Natural, Renewable Material

Coir is made from the fibres found in coconut husks, making it a renewable natural material.

As well as offering excellent scraping performance, it remains a popular choice for customers who appreciate the authentic appearance and character of natural entrance matting.

Good to Know

The best coir thickness isn't always the thickest one.

Choosing the correct depth depends on where the mat will be used and, if it's being fitted into a recessed mat well, the depth of the recess itself. A 17mm mat is an excellent all-round option, but if your mat well is significantly deeper or shallower, another thickness may provide a better fit.

From the Mats4U Team

One of the most common questions we're asked is whether a thicker coir mat is always better.

In reality, that's not necessarily the case.

The best thickness is the one that's right for your entrance. For many customers, 17mm offers the ideal combination of effective dirt scraping, durability and compatibility with standard mat wells, which is why it continues to be one of our most popular choices.

If you're replacing an existing coir mat and aren't sure which thickness you need, we're always happy to help before you order.

Natural Coir. Naturally Effective.
(Click to open/close)

Coir is one of the world's oldest and most trusted entrance matting materials. Made from the tough fibres found in coconut husks, it has been used for generations because of its durability, natural appearance and excellent dirt-scraping performance.

Unlike synthetic fibres, coir has a naturally coarse texture that helps remove mud, grit and everyday debris from footwear before it's carried further indoors. Every step across the mat helps reduce the amount of dirt entering your home or workplace, helping to keep internal floors cleaner.

One of the reasons coir remains so popular is its unique appearance. The natural fibres create a warm, traditional look that complements everything from period properties and country homes to modern offices, hotels and retail spaces.

Every Mat is Unique

Because coir is a natural product, no two pieces of matting are ever exactly the same.

You may notice slight variations in colour, fibre texture or density from one piece to another. These natural characteristics are completely normal and are part of what makes genuine coir matting unique.

Rather than being considered imperfections, these subtle variations are a reflection of the natural coconut fibres used to manufacture the mat.

Designed for Indoor & Sheltered Entrances

Coir performs best when used indoors or in covered outdoor areas that are protected from constant rain and prolonged direct sunlight.

While the fibres naturally cope well with everyday moisture from shoes and boots, prolonged exposure to the elements can reduce the lifespan of the mat over time.

For fully exposed outdoor entrances, we generally recommend choosing a purpose-designed outdoor entrance mat instead.

Good to Know

It's perfectly normal for a new coir mat to shed a small amount of loose fibre during its first few weeks of use.

This is a natural characteristic of coir and isn't a fault with the product. Regular vacuuming and gentle brushing during this initial period will quickly remove the loose fibres, after which shedding will reduce significantly under normal use.

From the Mats4U Team

One of the things we love most about coir is that it doesn't try to look perfect.

Every roll has its own natural character, and that's part of its appeal. The slight differences in colour and texture are a reminder that you're buying a product made from real coconut fibres rather than a synthetic imitation.

When customers ask us whether a colour variation is normal, the answer is always yes—and that's exactly what makes natural coir so distinctive.

Custom Cut to Your Exact Size
(Click to open/close)

No two entrances are exactly the same, which is why our 17mm Heavy-Duty Coir Matting is custom cut to the dimensions you specify.

Whether you're replacing an existing mat, fitting a recessed mat well or creating a new entrance area, ordering a custom size allows you to achieve a cleaner, more professional finish than trying to make a standard-sized mat fit.

Simply enter your required width and length when placing your order, and we'll cut the matting to your requested dimensions before it's dispatched.

Perfect for Replacing Existing Coir Matting

If your existing coir mat has seen better days, replacing it with a custom-cut piece is often the easiest way to refresh your entrance without altering the surrounding flooring.

Many customers simply measure their current mat—or, even better, the mat well itself—and order a replacement that's made to fit.

If you're replacing an older mat, it's worth checking the dimensions before ordering. Over time, many entrances end up with mats that are slightly too small, leaving unnecessary gaps around the edges.

Ideal for Recessed Mat Wells

One of the most popular uses for 17mm coir matting is in recessed mat wells.

A well-fitted mat sits neatly within the recess, creating a flush finish that not only looks smart but also helps reduce trip hazards around the entrance.

If you're installing the mat into a mat well, we recommend measuring the internal dimensions of the recess rather than the old mat, as this will usually provide the most accurate fit.

Manufacturing Tolerances

Because every piece is cut to order, there is a normal manufacturing tolerance of a few millimetres.

This is standard across the matting industry and allows for the characteristics of natural coir and the cutting process. In practice, these small variations are rarely noticeable once the mat has been installed.

Good to Know

If you're unsure about your measurements, it's always better to check before ordering.

Taking a few extra minutes to measure your entrance or mat well carefully can help ensure your new coir mat fits exactly as intended.

If you need any guidance, our team is always happy to help.

From the Mats4U Team

One of the most common questions we receive is whether customers should measure their old mat or the recess it sits in.

Where possible, we always recommend measuring the mat well itself.

Older mats can shrink, wear around the edges or simply have been the wrong size from the beginning. Measuring the recess gives you the best chance of achieving a neat, professional-looking fit with your new coir matting.

Choosing the Right Size
(Click to open/close)

Choosing the right size coir matting is just as important as choosing the right thickness. A well-fitted mat not only looks better, but also provides better coverage, helping remove more dirt and debris before it's carried further into your property.

Whether you're fitting your coir matting into a recessed mat well or laying it directly onto the floor, taking accurate measurements before ordering will help ensure the best possible fit.

For Recessed Mat Wells

If your coir matting is being installed into a mat well, we recommend measuring the inside dimensions of the recess rather than your existing mat.

Over time, older mats can wear, shrink slightly or simply have been the wrong size from the start. Measuring the recess itself will give you the most accurate dimensions for your replacement mat.

A correctly fitted mat should sit neatly within the recess without excessive gaps around the edges.

For Loose-Laid Entrances

If you're using your coir matting on the surface of the floor rather than in a mat well, think about how people naturally walk through the entrance.

A mat that covers the main walking route will generally remove more dirt than one that's only just wide enough for the doorway.

If space allows, choosing a slightly larger mat can improve both performance and the overall appearance of your entrance.

Available Sizes

Our 17mm Heavy-Duty Coir Matting is available:

  • Up to 200cm wide
  • Up to 1200cm long
  •  Custom cut to your exact dimensions

This flexibility allows you to order a mat that's made to suit your entrance, whether it's a compact residential doorway or a large commercial entrance.

Good to Know

Before ordering, it's worth measuring twice to ensure your dimensions are accurate.

As every piece of coir matting is custom cut to your specified size, taking a little extra time to check your measurements can help ensure a perfect fit when your mat arrives.

From the Mats4U Team

One piece of advice we often give customers is to think beyond the size of their old mat.

Many replacement orders are for mats that were never quite the right size in the first place. If you're refreshing your entrance, it's a good opportunity to measure the available space rather than simply ordering the same dimensions again.

A well-fitted coir mat doesn't just look more professional—it also performs better by covering more of the area where people naturally walk.

Installing Your Coir Matting
(Click to open/close)

Installing your 17mm Heavy-Duty Coir Matting is straightforward, whether you're replacing an existing mat or fitting a brand-new entrance.

Because every order is custom cut to your specified dimensions, your mat should require little or no additional trimming when it arrives.

Before installation, make sure the area is clean, dry and free from loose dirt or debris. This will help the mat sit neatly and perform as intended.

Installing into a Recessed Mat Well

  • 17mm coir matting is a popular choice for recessed mat wells because it creates a neat, professional-looking entrance.
  • Simply place the mat into the recess, ensuring it sits flat and is fully supported underneath.
  • For the best appearance and performance, the top of the mat should sit as close as possible to the surrounding floor level without sitting proud of the surface.
  • If your mat well is significantly deeper than 17mm, you may wish to use a suitable mat well infill beneath the coir matting to achieve a flush finish.

Installing as a Loose-Laid Mat

  • The PVC backing provides stability, allowing the mat to be laid directly onto suitable level flooring without the need for permanent fixing in many applications.
  • If the mat is being used in a porch or entranceway, ensure it lies completely flat before use.
  • Like any loose-laid entrance mat, performance can vary depending on the floor surface. If additional stability is required on particularly smooth flooring, a suitable anti-slip underlay can be used beneath the mat.

Can I Trim the Mat Myself?

Yes.

Although your coir matting is custom cut before dispatch, the PVC backing allows small adjustments to be made if required.

Using a sharp utility knife and a straight edge, you can carefully trim the mat to achieve the desired fit.

Always measure carefully before making any cuts, as trimmed matting cannot be restored to its original size.

Good to Know

Before placing your mat into a recessed well, it's worth giving the recess a quick clean.

Removing accumulated dirt, leaves and debris helps the mat sit evenly and allows it to perform at its best from day one.

From the Mats4U Team

One of the questions we're often asked is whether coir matting needs to be glued down. In most situations, the answer is no.

A well-fitted mat in a recessed mat well will usually stay securely in place under its own weight. For loose-laid installations, the PVC backing provides good stability on many floor surfaces. If you're installing the mat on a particularly smooth floor and would like additional grip, a suitable anti-slip underlay can be a simple and effective solution.

If you're unsure about the best installation method for your entrance, we're always happy to offer advice before you order.

Looking After Your Coir Mat
(Click to open/close)

One of the reasons coir has remained a popular entrance matting material for generations is that it's relatively simple to maintain. With regular care, your coir mat will continue to remove dirt effectively while retaining its traditional appearance for years to come.

Because coir is made from natural coconut fibres, it doesn't require specialist cleaning products. In fact, gentle, routine maintenance is usually the best way to keep it performing at its best.

Regular Vacuuming

Vacuum your coir mat regularly to remove the dirt, dust and debris trapped within the fibres.

Entrances with heavier foot traffic may benefit from more frequent cleaning, while quieter residential entrances can usually be maintained with less frequent vacuuming.

Keeping the fibres free from excess dirt helps the mat continue scraping footwear effectively.

Shedding is Perfectly Normal

If you've never owned a coir mat before, it's important to know that some fibre shedding during the first few weeks is completely normal.

Natural coconut fibres that haven't become fully compacted during manufacturing may work loose as the mat settles into everyday use. This is a natural characteristic of coir rather than a manufacturing fault.

Regular vacuuming or a gentle shake will quickly remove these loose fibres, and shedding will reduce significantly over time.

Avoid Prolonged Moisture

Coir is designed to cope with the everyday moisture brought in on shoes and boots, but like any natural fibre, it performs best when it isn't exposed to prolonged wet conditions.

If the mat becomes thoroughly wet, allow it to air dry naturally before putting it back into regular use.

For the longest possible lifespan, avoid placing coir matting where it will remain saturated for extended periods or be continuously exposed to rain.

Avoid Harsh Chemicals

Strong cleaning chemicals, bleach and solvent-based cleaners can damage or stain the natural coconut fibres.

For most situations, regular vacuuming and allowing the mat to dry naturally are all that's needed to keep it looking its best.

Rotate if Needed

If one area of the mat receives significantly more foot traffic than the rest, rotating it occasionally can help encourage more even wear and prolong its appearance.

This is particularly useful in busy residential entrances where people naturally follow the same path through a doorway.

Good to Know

Natural coir gradually develops character as it ages.

Over time, the fibres will soften slightly and the colour may mellow with use. These changes are part of the natural ageing process and don't affect the mat's ability to remove dirt from footwear.

From the Mats4U Team

One of the biggest misconceptions about coir matting is that it needs lots of maintenance.

In reality, it doesn't.

A quick vacuum every so often and allowing the mat to dry naturally if it becomes wet is usually all that's needed.

The biggest favour you can do for a coir mat is simply to use it as intended—indoors or in a covered entrance where it's protected from constant rain and prolonged exposure to the elements.

Where 17mm Coir Matting Performs Best
(Click to open/close)

Thanks to its excellent dirt-scraping properties and traditional appearance, 17mm Heavy-Duty Coir Matting is suitable for a wide range of entrances. Whether you're replacing a worn mat in your home or fitting out a busy commercial entrance, it provides an effective first line of defence against dirt and debris.

While it's a versatile entrance matting solution, it's designed to perform best indoors or in covered outdoor areas where it's protected from prolonged exposure to rain and direct sunlight.

Residential Entrances

17mm coir matting remains one of the most popular choices for front doors, porches and utility rooms.

Its natural fibres help remove mud, leaves and everyday dirt from footwear before it's carried further into the home, while its classic appearance complements both traditional and contemporary properties.

Offices & Workplace Entrances

Create a cleaner and more welcoming first impression for employees, visitors and customers.

Installed in reception areas or entrance lobbies, coir matting helps reduce the amount of dirt brought into the building, helping protect internal flooring and reducing day-to-day cleaning.

Shops & Retail Premises

Retail entrances experience a constant flow of customers throughout the day.

A well-fitted coir mat helps trap dirt at the entrance while creating a warm, traditional welcome for everyone who walks through the door.

Hotels, Pubs & Hospitality Venues

For businesses where first impressions matter, natural coir offers both practicality and timeless appeal.

Whether installed in a country pub, boutique hotel, guest house or restaurant entrance, coir provides an attractive entrance solution that helps maintain cleaner floors throughout the day.

Schools & Public Buildings

Schools, community centres, churches and other public buildings benefit from effective entrance matting that helps reduce the amount of dirt tracked indoors.

17mm coir matting offers a durable, traditional solution that's well suited to entrances with regular daily foot traffic.

Recessed Mat Wells

Because it's available custom cut to your exact dimensions, 17mm coir matting is particularly popular for replacing worn mat well inserts.

A well-fitted mat creates a tidy, professional-looking entrance while providing effective dirt removal from the moment visitors step inside.

Good to Know

Although coir is extremely durable, it's designed primarily for removing dry dirt, grit and everyday debris.

If your entrance regularly experiences large amounts of water or is fully exposed to the weather, another entrance matting solution may be more suitable. If you're unsure, our team will be happy to recommend the best option for your environment.

From the Mats4U Team

One of the reasons we've supplied coir matting for so many years is its versatility.

It's equally at home in a traditional cottage, a busy office reception or the entrance to a local shop.

The key isn't whether the building is residential or commercial—it's whether the entrance is suitable for natural coir. If it's indoors or protected from the worst of the weather, 17mm coir remains one of the most reliable and attractive entrance matting choices available.

Is 17mm Heavy-Duty Coir Matting the Right Choice for You?
(Click to open/close)

If you're looking for a traditional entrance mat that combines excellent dirt-scraping performance with a timeless natural appearance, 17mm Heavy-Duty Coir Matting is an excellent choice for many homes and businesses.

Its natural coconut fibres help remove dirt and debris from footwear before it's carried indoors, while the 17mm thickness offers a practical balance between effective performance and compatibility with many standard mat wells.

Like any entrance mat, however, it's important to choose the right product for your environment.

17mm Coir Matting is a Great Choice If You:

  • Want a traditional natural fibre entrance mat.
  • Need a custom-cut mat for a recessed mat well or entrance.
  • Are replacing an existing 17mm coir mat.
  • Want excellent dirt-scraping performance.
  • Prefer the authentic appearance and character of natural materials.
  • Are installing the mat indoors or in a covered outdoor entrance.
  • Want a durable entrance mat that's simple to maintain.

You May Wish to Consider an Alternative If You:

  • Need a mat for a fully exposed outdoor entrance.
  • Require exceptional moisture absorption in areas that regularly become wet.
  • Need a different thickness to match an existing recessed mat well.
  • Prefer a synthetic entrance mat with a softer surface finish.
  • Require specialist properties such as oil resistance, anti-fatigue performance or enhanced slip resistance.
  • If you're unsure which entrance mat is best for your environment, we're always happy to help you compare the available options.

Good to Know

Choosing the right entrance mat isn't about buying the most expensive product or the thickest mat.

It's about selecting the mat that's best suited to your entrance, your flooring and the conditions it will be used in.

For many customers, 17mm coir offers the ideal balance of traditional appearance, effective dirt removal and everyday practicality—but every entrance is different.

From the Mats4U Team

One of the things we've learned over the years is that there's no such thing as a "one-size-fits-all" entrance mat.

A product that's perfect for one customer might not be the best choice for another.

That's why we'd always rather help you choose the right mat than simply sell you the one you're looking at.

If, after reading this page, you think another product in our range might suit your entrance better, we'll happily point you in the right direction. Our goal is to help you find a mat you'll be pleased with every time you walk through the door.

Frequently Asked Questions
(Click to open/close)

Does coir matting shed?

Yes. It's completely normal for a new coir mat to shed a small amount of loose fibre during the first few weeks of use.

Because coir is a natural material made from coconut fibres, some loose fibres are expected as the mat settles into everyday use. Regular vacuuming or a gentle shake will quickly remove these fibres, and shedding will reduce over time.

Can coir matting be used outside?

17mm Heavy-Duty Coir Matting is best suited to indoor or covered outdoor entrances.

While it can cope with the everyday moisture carried in on footwear, prolonged exposure to rain and direct sunlight can reduce the lifespan of the natural fibres. For fully exposed entrances, we'd recommend choosing a mat that's specifically designed for outdoor use.

Will my coir mat look exactly like the photos?

Because coir is a natural product, every piece has its own unique character.

Slight variations in colour, fibre texture and appearance are completely normal and are part of what makes genuine coir matting distinctive.

Can I order a custom size?

Yes. Every piece of 17mm Heavy-Duty Coir Matting is custom cut to the dimensions you specify.

Simply enter your required width and length when placing your order, and we'll prepare your mat to those measurements.

What is the largest size available?

Our 17mm Heavy-Duty Coir Matting is available in custom sizes up to: 200cm wide 1200cm long If you're working on a larger entrance project, please contact our team and we'll be happy to discuss the available options.

Is 17mm the right thickness for my mat well?

17mm is one of the most common coir matting thicknesses and fits many standard recessed mat wells.

If you're replacing an existing mat, we recommend measuring the depth of your mat well before ordering. If you're unsure which thickness you need, our team will be happy to help.

How do I clean coir matting?

Regular vacuuming is usually all that's needed to keep your coir mat performing well.

If required, you can also gently shake or brush the mat to remove trapped dirt. Avoid harsh chemicals and allow the mat to air dry naturally if it becomes wet.

Can coir matting be used in homes as well as businesses?

Absolutely.

17mm Heavy-Duty Coir Matting is suitable for a wide range of residential and commercial entrances, including homes, offices, schools, shops, hotels and public buildings. The most important consideration is that the entrance is indoors or protected from prolonged exposure to the weather.

Is coir an environmentally friendly material?

Coir is made from the natural fibres found in coconut husks, making it a renewable natural material.

Its popularity comes not only from its excellent dirt-scraping performance but also from its traditional appearance and the fact that it's made from a naturally sourced fibre.

What if I'm not sure which coir matting I need?

If you're unsure about the right thickness, size or whether coir is the best option for your entrance, we're here to help.

Our team will happily talk you through the options and recommend the most suitable product for your particular entrance and application.

Need Help Choosing?
